I have to admit that one of my little pleasures in life is seeing the look on the face of someone when they read a form that I fill out. Under occupation I simply put Shaman. Granted "other" would have done the job, but I never pass up an opportunity to spark a conversation about the subject of Shamanism. The reactions range from curiosity and intrigue to fear and skepticism. All of which are very understandable reactions. Shamanism is actually practiced all over the world. Witchdoctor, Medicine man, Spiritualist, Rabbi, Priestess and Priest are just some of the other names for Shamen.
The Shamans primary role is to be the go between for the Spirit World and the members of the Tribe. He is the psychologist, doctor, counselor and religious figure who performs the sacred rites and offers the spiritual teachings and guidance for the Tribe. We all come from a Tribe of one form or another. You dont have to be Native American for this to apply. Our family and friends, our co-workers, the people that we make our relations are all members of our personal Tribes. In another way of looking at it, we are all part of the Uniworld Rainbow Tribe. The Tribe of Humanity made of many colors yet all part of the Creator.
Some of the traditional functions of a Shaman are to interpret visions and dreams, to name members of the Tribe and help them to find their path, ceremony and ritual, soul retrieval, journeying, healing and prophesy. Shamen are intimately connected to the forces of nature and the elements. They work with Animal Totems and Spirit Guides to help them in their efforts. They follow the seasons and the cycles of the moon and sun. Shamen use many tools, such as the rattle and the drum to help in their practices to connect to the divine. It is this connection with Grandfather and Grandmother that allows the Shaman to pierce the veil between the worlds and affect change in the waking reality.
In my path as a Shaman I have been blessed with many gifts from Grandfather/Grandmother. Many of these gifts I have made available to my clients to help them with their personal situations. Being able to help in this way has been the truest blessing to me personally.
