many years ago I met a woman who introduced me to my personal animal totems. She was a quiet woman and I had trouble following her guided meditation at first. After a bit I settled in and began a journey that is still going on today. She took me to each of my chakras and asked me to “call forth” the animal that lived there. To my amazement when I called, they came to me. The visions were so vivid that I can still see them clearly in my mind.
We began at my root chakra. I relaxed and went to that spot in me. As I concentrated on the color red and my root I began to see a large stag. He was majestic and powerful. As I connected with him I felt a surge of energy. Primal and free. It was incredible.
She then guided me to my second chakra, where once again I relaxed and focused on the color orange. Shortly I began to see a round shape. It looked like a boulder. As I listened to the voice of the woman the boulder sprouted legs and a head. It was a tortoise. I almost laughed out loud, just as the woman explained that this animal was to help me with my emotions.
The solar plexus was the easiest. As I went to that space in me I found that the animal was waiting for me. It was a beautiful red tailed hawk. I saw the hawk circling, gliding. She slowly circled downward and I saw her land in my mind. Imagine my surprise as I heard a voice saying to me, “I am moonhawk and I am your strength”. The voice was so familiar, like I had known it my whole life.
My heart began to open as I listened to the woman’s soft guidance. She had burned cedar and sage and the smell along with her soft way was really taking me deeper and deeper. As I opened my awareness to my heart chakra I saw coming out of the darkness a deer. Elegant and graceful. She stopped and looked at me with the gentlest eyes I have ever seen. I heard a soothing voice say to me, “I am Fauna, I am love”. A feeling of peace came over me.
Anyone who knows me in person would not be surprised at what happened next. I concentrated on my throat and actually started growling a bit as the image of the black bear came into my mind. I knew his name was “Bigwi” even though I didn’t hear him speak. The funny part to me is that I have a rather deep voice and have at times been accused of being loud. The image of the bear at my “communication chakra” was almost too funny for me to go on.
They were coming to me very easily at this point. As the woman guided me to my third eye I was a bit surprised at what I saw. The hawk I had seen at my solar plexus was there, but so was a black panther. I tried my best to explain to the lady about my confusion. She told me to relax and simply ask them why they were both there. I breathed in deeply and tried to go into the vision. The familiar voice of the hawk told me that they were both to work with me when it came to my psychic sight. I became aware of the panther, “Jaga”, and heard that he was to help me to see on the earth plane and that the hawk would help me to rise above for a different perspective. I was told that this duel sight was my greatest strength. That has certainly been true in my counseling sessions.
Finally, we arrived at my crown. In the quiet of my mind I saw myself lying there. As I relaxed into the image I saw a Phoenix flying high over head. Brilliant flames of every color exploded in my mind. I began to breathe more deeply, really getting into the image. Then suddenly the Phoenix went into a steep dive, headed right for me. Just before it hit, it pulled up and began to hover directly over me. I took one more breath and felt a surge of energy and power as the Phoenix lowered and settled into my body. I felt us connect as one. I have never been able to find the words to describe the sensation. I don’t know how long I was caught up in that feeling, but the next thing I knew the lady was gently telling me it was time to wake up.
As I opened my eyes and began to look around I saw the face of the woman. Her gentle smile, her soft aura, it all made me feel comfortable with the experience I had just had. She told me I had met my “grand counsel” and that I could call on them anytime. I have done this ever since. The counsel is with me constantly. Not only making my “inner totem pole”, but appearing in the physical and spirit forms. I have come to rely on them greatly. Other animals have joined us. A wolf and a raven specifically.
Not all of the animals I work with are non-physical. Currently I share my life with two cats, Sunny and Dolly…a Shepherd/Rottweiler named Tao…a blue and gold macaw, Loki and a blue front amazon named Zen. They are constant companions and at times offer me great insight. They aren’t opposed to offering lessons in patience and caring either.
If you don’t know your animal totems pay
attention. They are all around us. They are willing and able to offer
us guidance and help with our lives. By taking on the energy of an
animal we can tap into its way of being. We can gain the strength of a
bear or the gentleness of a fawn. We can discover the freedom of a
soaring eagle or touch the depths only before reached by a whale. Pay
attention to the animals that present themselves in your life. They are
there for a reason.
It is time to call council………
